Class Descriptions

Find the class for you - Children's ability levels

We offer classes for all abilitites, simply follow our ability level guidelines to select the most suitable class for your child.

Pre-School

Classes are broken down into age groups as follows:

Age 0 - 24 months - Discovery Ducklings*
Age 2 - 5 years  - Ducklings*
Age 3 1/2 - 5 years Pre-Beginner

A structured course to increase water confidence and develop awareness through play, songs and movement. *Class requires a parent/carer in the water.

Stage 1 & 2 (4+ years)

Suitable for children who are unable to swim one width on their back and front confidently. Stages 1 & 2 develop basic safety awareness, movement skills and water confidence. Includes safe entries into the water, jumping in, floating, independent travel and rotation unaided to regian upright positions.

Swimmers may use aids which will be reduced as they progress and gain their confidence.

Stage 3

Suitable for children who can confidently swim one width of a pool unaided on their front and back and are water confident. Pupils will develop skill techniques in the main strokes, safe entries including submersion, progress rotation skills and water safety knowledge.

Stage 4

Suitable for children who can swim 10 metres showing basic skills in front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke. Children will develop the understanding of buoyancy through a range of skills, refining kicking technique for all strokes and developing swimming techniques and stamina.

Stage 5

Suitable for children who can swim 10 metres demonstrating basic front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly techniques. This level includes an introduction to sculling, treading water and somersaults along with progressive stamina and stroke development. Children should be able to kick 25 metres on their front and back.

Stage 6

Suitable for children who can swim 25 metres using front crawl, bacstroke and breaststroke. Pupils will develop effective swimming skills including coordinated breathing, water safety and understanding of preparation for exercise. Pupils will continue to improve stroke technique and stamina. Children should be able to swim 50 metres of any one stroke.

Stage 7

Suitable for children who can swim 50 metres front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke. This level will incorporate starts, diving and turns along with developing quality stroke techniques up to 100 metres. Children should be able to swim 100 metres of any one stroke.

Please note: After successful completion of Stage 7, pupils can choose to diversify into either Competition, Rookie (Lifesaving) or Diving at Stage 8.

Stage 8 Competitive Swimming

Suitable for children who can swim 50 metres in front crawl, backstroke,breaststroke and butterfly, perform a movemement sequence of 1 minute, perform a sitting dive and swim 200 metres using a minimum of 3 different strokes along with the ability to tread water effectively. Children should be able to swim 200 metres of any one stroke.

Stage 9 Competitive Swimming

Pupils must have the skills and stamina to complete 400 metres within a given time, and swim 400 metres continuoulsy using one stroke. In addition, pupils must be able to Kick 25 metres in all four strokes along with performing a turn in each stroke.

Stage 10 Competitive Swimming

Suitable for children who are able to perform a complete set lasting 800 metres and 800 metres using one stroke. In addition, pupils must be able to swim a 100 metre IM, (with turns), a 15 metre underwater kick along with starts in all strokes.

Stroke Development

Stroke development is aimed at competent swimmers who would like to improve their technique. Swimmers should have a basic knowledge of all strokes and be able to swim at least 200 metres without stopping.

Stage 8, 9 & 10 Rookie Lifeguard

Rookie has three stages; Bronze, Silver and Gold and each stage is divided into three modules (levels). The Rookie instructor will sign off skills as soon as pupils achieve them, without the need to attain all elements in any one session.

It's never too late to start enjoying swimming. Simply select the level which suits your current ability and start enjoying swimming as an activity which improves your fitness, flexibility and your general well being.

Adult Beginner

If you are new to the water or need to improve your confidence, our adult beginner’s classes help develop the skills required to enable stroke development. Our beginner classes are designed to introduce you to basic stokes and movement through the water.

Adult Improver

Suitable for swimmers able to swim 25 metres on back and front. We will help you to improve your stroke technique and efficiency along with developing water confidence.

Adult Advanced

Suitable for swimmers able to swim 50 metres on back and front. Improve or refresh your stroke techniques and swimming skills.

Adult Stamina

Suitable for swimmers who can swim 100 metres using 3 strokes. The focus is on stamina, efficient techniques and stroke improvement.

Diving Stage 8, 9 & 10

Suitable for pupils who can confidently swim at least 25 metres.
